TSA PreCheck Application Process

Getting TSA PreCheck is a breeze and can make your airport experience much smoother. Here's how you can get it done, both online and in person.

Online Application for TSA PreCheck

First things first, you need to fill out the online application. It's quick—takes about five minutes. You'll provide some basic info and answer a few security questions.

To get started, head over to the official TSA PreCheck website and follow the steps.

In-Person Enrollment Process

After the online part, you'll need to go to an enrollment center. This is where they collect your biometric data, check your ID, and take your payment.

Steps for In-Person Enrollment:

  1. Schedule an Appointment: Book a time at a nearby enrollment center through the TSA PreCheck website.
  2. Biometric Data Collection: They'll take your fingerprints and a photo.
  3. Document Verification: Bring the required documents to verify your identity.
  4. Payment: Pay the $85 fee, which covers five years of membership (TSA.gov).

The whole in-person thing usually takes about 10 minutes.

Once you've done both the online and in-person steps, you'll get your Known Traveler Number (KTN). This number is your ticket to faster TSA screening.

What You Need for TSA PreCheck

Getting your TSA PreCheck application right means bringing the right stuff to your appointment. The TSA needs to see certain documents to confirm who you are and that you're a U.S. citizen.

What to Bring for TSA PreCheck

Starting May 2024, you must show either one item from List A or two from List B. If you can't get those, you'll need a valid photo ID and something that proves your citizenship (Chase).

List A (Just One Needed)

  • U.S. Passport
  • U.S. Passport Card
  • Permanent Resident Card
  • Enhanced Driver's License

List B (Two Needed)

  • Driver's License
  • Birth Certificate (must come with a photo ID)
  • State ID Card
  • Military ID

Make sure the name on your documents matches the name on your TSA PreCheck application. If you've changed your name, bring proof, such as a marriage certificate or court order.

A Social Security card won't cut it for TSA PreCheck. Instead, bring other documents to prove your citizenship and a photo ID.

When you go to your TSA PreCheck appointment, don't forget:

  • The right ID documents
  • A way to pay the application fee
  • Any extra documents they asked for
