U.S. Crewmember Visa
don’t get stranded while on-shore!
What is a U.S. Crewmember Visa?
Crewmember visas have been created for people travelling to the U.S. as part of a crew on an aircraft or other vessel, who will be staying in the U.S. for less than 29 days before travelling to the next destination of the ship they are working on.
For this type of visa the authorities request proof of employment as a crew member (pilot or flight attendant on a commercial airplane; captain, engineer, or deckhand on a sea vessel; lifeguard, cook, waiter, beautician on a cruise ship; trainee on a training vessel, etc.). Crew members who are travelling to the U.S. as regular passengers and who will join their vessel in the U.S. also need a transit visa. Generally a combined C1/D visa is granted.
Most crew members remember that they need the visa just shortly before their trip to the U.S.
Getting help from a travel & immigration consultant is priceless especially when you are busy working on the ship or when you left your home country and you are already on board, in a different country than your own.
Standard requirements for a crewmember visa:
- Have a valid passport. The validity date must be at least 6 months beyond your intended period of stay.
- Work on board of a commercial sea vessel or an international airline in the U.S., providing services required for normal operation.
- Intend to depart the U.S. on the same vessel or any other vessel within 29 days.
- Dispose of enough money to cover your travel, accommodation, and other expenses while in the U.S.
- Have a residence outside the United States, as well as other binding ties to your home country, that will ensure you will leave the U.S. at the end of your temporary stay.
The most common causes for delays and even rejections are:
- Provide incomplete data
- Personal information required for third country nationals
- Consular procedures and backlog
Most of the above (though not all cases) could be predicted and offset when employing the service of a dedicated and experienced travel & immigration consultant.
